Seeing it later this month.

The real question is why the fuck hasn't Todd Solondz's film been picked up for distro yet so I can go see it in the theater?

In my totally uninformed opinion, I would think that some scenes would qualify as pornography. Its really depressing and Dafoe and Gainsbourg are literally the only two actors in the whole film.

The reason I'm wondering is they show some penetration, lots of genitalia and the mutilation that takes place, albeit short, is pretty out of control.

I'm all about short penetration!

Great fucking movie. I didn't think the sex was that hardcore for the movies. The violence was pretty intense, they show things more than they do in movies like Hostel without cutting away, but its not some obscene bloodfest.
Without giving anything away, the worst/most intense part of the movie involves the ejaculation of blood.

I'd put this and Hurt Locker as best movies of 2009.

I watched this move over Christmas break...on demand, at home, WITH MY ENTIRE FAMILY. Intruiging film but...I could have done without sitting right next to my dad.

My sister's boyfriend will never live that recommendation down EVER!

You can find it on Time Warner On Demand under IFC In Theaters (which always has some good stuff).

Someone told me Von Trier's production company also does hardcore porn films.

comcast has it on on demand also. I haven't watched it because my wife refuses to see it after reading a review.

good luck.

was worth it to see it on the big screen.
really good performances and art direction, very very very intense and heavy. not meant to be "enjoyable".
about 8 people got up and left during the "climax" of the film
just thinking about it is making my squeamish.

Seriously, I want to see it again so I can analyze it more. I think this movie had a lot to do with von Trier finding out that he wasn't raised by his biological father.

Yeah, as far as I know Zentropa releases hardcore porn. Von Trier is kind of a freak. If you haven't seen them, Epidemic and his tv show Riget are amazing. I can't deal with the Dogme95 shit though, it's too upsetting to me. I heard that Antichrist is mega disturbing as well. I doubt I'll have the stomach for it.

I don't like dogme95 as an idea or really even understand the point of it, but I did enjoy Element of Crime

I think dogme makes perfect sense, but it was a little ridiculous to codify it the way he did. But this movie was in many ways a repudiation of the dogme rules.

The violence was unsettling in parts, but it was all symbolic so it didn't really bother me that much.
